Virtual Sketch Date

Before I write anything else I want to thank everyone who commented on my last post. All of your kind and encouraging comments are greatly appreciated!

Now here is my entry for this month's Virtual Sketch Date. And my first time participating in this project. So I gave it a few tries. Then not sure which of my attempts to post I decided what the heck, I'll just post them all here.

First I sketched a cropped version of the image, a Tree Peony provided by Sharon. I did this one with colored pencils in my Moleskine journal.

Then I did an ink sketch in my watercolor Moleskine and splashed about with watercolors. Not being particularly thrilled with that I tried just watercolor, no preliminary drawing.
This one loses some accuracy in form but oh well. It was fun to play with this image.

  1. Oh my! Not one, not two, but three sketches! It took me all week to do one. I cannot decide which one I like best. I love the softness of the first one, the line-work in the second and the third one is so free. Heck, they are all fabulous!

  4. I like the composition of the coloured pencil version - I'm slowly learning how to crop! And I really like the ink and watercolour version, lovely wash of colours.

  6. Okay, I think you deserve the award for most industrious - well...if there was such an award. :D All three versions are interesting in their own right. But I must say the cropped version is my favorite.

  11. My favorite is the cropped colored pencil one. I love how the edges just sort of end. I can also tell that you layered a lot of different colors which adds to the soft look.

  12. Well the colored pencil is beautiful and a nicely developed piece. But I do love the spontaneity of the smaller sketches they are fresh and lively.

  13. I like the three different approaches but I think I like the cropped one the best but I do really like the simple ink drawing with splashes of color.

  15. Hi Ann,
Each of your pieces are so good!

What I am learning from looking at all the artists renditions is that making the background something other than black was the way to go.

  16. All three are great, even the little sketch, it has great energy and a good composition. I hadn't seen your drawing "november", it's awesome. Beautiful and realistic, and the details (the trees on the left!) are stunning!
And in passing... I wanted to say I've sent you an award, it's on my blog if you want to pick it up!

  17. How fun that you posted three renderings.....beautifully done colored pencil piece, but I gotta say, that little ink and wash is precious!

  18. I like all of these, but especially love the pencil drawing. You did a wonderful job on the petals and leaves - very detailed and realistic! And good composition, too.

  20. I struggled to get one value study done and you have done three excellent presentations! i think I like the second one best but all three have something very distinct to say.

  21. interesting how all three evoke a very different mood, the first is so soft and ethreal, the second is very energetic to me and the third has that afternoon light effect, where everything is so much richer and saturated. The first is my fav as I really liked your crop.

  22. I like them all, but am especially fond of the cropped one.

  26. My favourite is the coloured pencil piece but as a c.p. artist, I am just a wee bit biased. :-) I love your use of colour and your stroke technique. Lovely.
