Zen Stonesgraphite on paper
4.5 x 6.5 inches

It has been a while since I worked on my graphite still life series. Some time ago I photographed several different natural objects specifically for this series. I had the image of these stones just waiting to be drawn when I saw Jeanette Jobson's
Rock Challenge. That was the inspiration I needed to get going with this series again. This is done on Strathmore 500 Series Bristol paper. I look forward to seeing all the other interpretations of Jeanette's Rock Challenge.
It's just lovely, Ann...so much weight...
ReplyDeleteYes Weight, and hardness - Every once in a while some one posts something that just makes my jaw drop - this is one of them !!!
ReplyDeleteSuperb!
ReplyDeletereally great rough texture to the stones :) and the lighting is really well done!
ReplyDeleteAwesome job Ann! The lights and the shadows are just perfect! I am literally drooling at the details you did on the rocks' surfaces, and I could somehow feel the chill(ya know, rocks have better thermal conductivity). And I just love the way you handled the back and the foreground ^^
ReplyDeleteThe title of your piece is perfect for it. This is a beautiful work. The textures in the individual rocks just pull me in.
ReplyDeleteThis is striking. I feel like I could reach out and push that little tower over (is that wrong?). Great work.
ReplyDeleteYou did a really nice job on these. They almost look like a photo of rocks.
ReplyDeleteThank Heaven for inspiration. This is perfect. What a wonderful series this will be.
ReplyDelete...gorgeous. I love the darks...the lights...it's beautiful!
ReplyDelete..these are amazing....can't wait to see the whole series
ReplyDeleteExcellent job Ann! For myself, it's one of those pieces that you could look at over and over again and never get tired of.
ReplyDeleteIf I could, I'd like to request a post on how you set this up to take a reference shot since the lighting in this is excellent.
... pretty please? ;)
how wonderful
ReplyDeleteI love realism and the rocks look very real! Cool as the kids would say!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteJeff, they probably would fall over very easily but that wouldn't be very "zen-like" would it? :-)
Rita, there's really not much to it. I just put them in a cardboard box, shine a light on it and snap a few photos. I only do this because I have no space to set up and leave a still life. I'll try to remember to post a few sample shots the next time I have a photo session :)
I love drawings that are clean and simple yet complex. This fits the bill on all counts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining in with the rock challenge.
These are fantastic, Ann. Fantatstic.
ReplyDeleteLove it!!!
