Afternoon

A scene from one of those gloriously sunny, summer afternoons here in the Southern Mountains. Just like today. Summer is such a beautiful season here in the Blue Ridge. Always 10 to 15 degrees cooler than our flat land neighbors but a shorter summer none-the-less. Everything grows fast and furious.
We planted a few tomato plants the other day, even though we are risking frost by putting them in the ground before Memorial Day, as the local wisdom suggests. It's a pesto garden, with basil and parsley along with the tomatoes. And it's kind of a joke with us about planting tomatoes. Chances are we won't get one tomato. But every once in a while we have a summer that is warm enough for long enough and we do get to enjoy a tomato or three. It's kind of like buying a lottery ticket. Odds are against winning but you want to play the game anyway.
Ann, you are really coming along with this project :) I think it is looking great :)
ReplyDeleteEverything hues of green, bringing the spring forth, fresh new ideas...drying in your paint! Very nice...so much done in a days time!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful painting, and I love the idea of a pesto garden! I'd bank on getting tomatoes, too! nancy
ReplyDeleteIt's almost like the trees are talking to each other =) Love the colors and the background too. #27... and to think that there's still 73 paintings to go, 73 paintings to admire for us all.... YAY!
ReplyDeleteA beautiful landscape, Ann, truly. The richness of oils is so far superior to acrylics, I think, and I immediately knew this was an oil painting. I can't quite verbalize what I am thinking, but there is a life, an inner light that comes through the oils and this painting just proves it out. It is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLovely, as always! I feel a little bit like the last line of your blog when I approach each of my watercolor portraits: "Odds are against winning but you want to play the game anyway.":)
ReplyDeletebeautiful painting, a perfect serene afternoon.
ReplyDeletebeautiful work as always!
ReplyDeleteThis is really nice! As soon as I saw the painting I was struck by the warm summer light.... which you captured very well. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBright and beautiful, lovely painting! A real painting a day is quite a challenge! Sketching and posting everyday is lots for me! Do you know about the dailypainters.com site? If not check them out, they paint and post everyday!
ReplyDeleteContinued success!
This is beautiful, Ann! I love a cooler summer and I miss the summers I used to get while living in Boise. Yesterday we hit 100 degrees with about 50% humidity. I just have to keep reminding myself-- at least we have a great growing season. Each of my tomato plants has at least 20 tomatoes on it. I have fourteen. But, I'm already suffocating and it isn't even June yet!
ReplyDeleteYour tree picture looks wonderful. I can see how you'd have trouble when comparing watercolor trees to these. They are very different but both these and your recent watercolor ones are very nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone!
ReplyDeleteAlex, I am just finishing up painting #40 now, but my posting is a bit behind my painting. I'll catch up eventually!
AutumnLeaves - I think the difference you see is that oil paint has linseed oil in it, giving all the colors a common warmth that acrylic doesn't.
Jennifer, your portraits are all stunning! I can't imagine how breathtaking they will be when you get to #100!
Thanks Lyn - I have seen the daily painters site and can't imaging painting and posting every day!
Raena - you have tomatoes already!!! Sounds like lots of canning soon!
Thanks again all! I really appreciate all of your visits and comments:-)
