Sketchbook Tuesday - Pickle day

It poured rain all day yesterday, as tropical storm Lee made its way up through our Southern mountains. So we did what any family would do on a washed out Labor Day holiday - we made pickles. I've had my mother-in-law's pickle recipe for years but never tried to make her delicious bread and butter pickles. Thinking about those pickles recently inspired us to give it a try. We bought a ton of locally grown, organic cucumbers (because you know we didn't grow cucumbers ourselves!) and pint jars, and set to work boiling jars and heating vinegar. Several hours later we had 10 pint jars filled and just a few left over cukes. It was a good pickle day.

We actually did grow cucumbers for the first time this year. Ironically, we don't really care for them, but my husband loves pickles, so I think we're going to give that a try. We have 3 on the vine and 1 on the kitchen counter right now. Is that enough to pickle?
For me today was Bird day. In fact it's bird week at the Noodle Factory. I'd love some feedback and some votes on which bird to draw tomorrow.

A good pickle day means a great sketch day too. I love that you call them 'cukes' too, as our family has always done. x

I have no idea what a "bread and butter" pickle is, but they sure look delicious in your painting!

I don't know what butter pickles are, but I love the painting you made of them.

Bread and butter pickles sound intriguieng... My husband was making branstone- style pickle (english pickle sauce for sandwiches)the other day, but we might have to try pickling cucumbers next. All this inspired by your sketch!

I know what bread and butter pickles are! And I can just taste them now -- pickle day sounds wonderful, and so is the sketch.

I should have thought of making pickles before I gave all my homegrown cucumbers to the neighbors before they went bad! Lovely page! I do love pickles and it's funny how just seeing a drawing of one can set my mouth to watering!
