Sketchbook Tuesday :: lilacs

Spring arrived early for us this year. First the daffodils, a month early, followed soon after by the forsythia blooming. It has been hard to trust this early blossoming. We kept thinking another snow, or ice storm, was sure to happen before it would really be springtime. But now, three weeks ahead of schedule, my lilac bush is blooming. I cut a sprig, put it in an old milk bottle (if you are of a certain age you will remember those little glass milk bottles from grade school) and placed it on the kitchen table. Love that scent of lilac. It's a good spring when my lilac bush blooms.

Spring has returned. The Earth is like a child that knows poems.

Your bouquet is so fresh and lovely, Ann!! The very essence of spring!

Your lyrical painting reminds me that it's time to trot along the fences out back and "prune" my neighbor'd lilac bush, which sprawls all over outside their fence...hm, hm, gardener's larceny..

I love your lilacs! I can see small flower buds in my lilac bush, but they are far from open yet.

Yes, I do remember those little milk jugs ... I love how you have captured the depth of the lilac bloom, with flowers in the front and flowers behind. THe smell of lilacs will always bring memories of my childhood ...

everything had blossomed early here, but we have not had much of a winter so I think everything decided that spring had come early

mother in law has some lilacs in her front yard, the smell is almost overpowering

This is lovely. Lilacs bring back so many good memories I wish I could smell them.

How beautiful - I love all the different shades in the flower. Can almost smell the perfume from here!

My favorite flower! I love their scent so much. I'm definitely of an age (I think a bit older than you) and I've always had the milk cartons like those the kids still get today. Huh... Interesting to think on!

Thanks everyone!
Boud, I'd say that if the lilac blossoms are on your side of the fence, prune away!
Yes, the scent of lilac is one of my favorites. And they bloom for such a short while, but heavenly while it lasts!
Sherry, we had the little bottles in kindergarten, maybe first grade, then it was the small cartons from them on. Different cities probably phased them out at different times. The little bottles are so very cute though :-)
Thanks again all for your visits and comments!
