Sketchbook Tuesday :: trees

Lately, I haven't been filling my sketchbook pages as often as I'd like. And that's something I miss doing.  A beautiful day Sunday beckoned me to sit on our back deck and sketch a few of the forest of trees that make up our back and side yards. They won't be green for long. Already you can find red and orange leaves here and there. But for now, the katydids and locusts hiss and sing, the bull frog still croaks in the evenings, and yes, our cat birds still call every afternoon.

Now I am calling this one finished. It did take me a while, probably too long with too many interruptions, to get it to this state of completion. What with my usual busyness and being easily distracted, I let this drawing sit idle much of the time. I do see a small series, or companion pieces, to go with this one. We'll see.

Sketchbook Tuesday :: sunflower

I picked up a bunch of sunflowers at our market last Saturday in celebration of returning home after a brief trip away. The trip was good but there is nothing quite the same as being in your own place.

And this week we are beginning a new school year here which is also cause for celebration. New beginnings, new routines, a new season is calling.

A view from the Blue Ridge Parkway, sketched in ink and washed with watercolor. I am liking this method of ink and wash, for the time being anyway.

Sketchbook Tuesday :: blossom

The flowers and wild flowers have been especially beautiful in our Southern mountains this year. So here is yet another watercolor sketch of flowers that were gathered from our yard. (And yes, I realize it is dated 28 August. I didn't notice that I had written the wrong date until I posted it here. It's corrected now with August crossed out and replaced with July. At least I had the day right. I think...)

And the day came
when the risk to remain tight in a bud
was more painful
than the risk it took to blossom.

what I don't know

Most of the time I am perfectly content staying with a process or media that I know well.  But every once in a while, I like to mix things up a bit and try something beyond my comfort zone, just to see what will happen. This was one of those times. Experimenting with a quick ink sketch and filling in with watercolor wash. The image is inspired by the marshes of Edisto Island, SC, taken from a photo snapped as we were leaving the island this past spring.
