sketchbook :: plum

These plums were so pretty in our grocery that I had to buy one to paint. Yep, I only bought one because, you see, I have never eaten a plum and I didn't know if I would like it. It's still sitting in our fridge. I did, however, really enjoy painting it's gorgeous purpley color.

If you bought it from the grocery store it will not be good. My dad used to have a tree and oh, the plums were so delicious. I have yet to find ONE from a store that is good. I don't even bother anymore. Keeping it in the fridge though isn't the way to keep it. It won't "ripen" any there (they pick them too green to have any flavor but still, they need room temps).

Your picture came out terrific. It looks just like a ripe plum. I like the napkin background too.

Thanks Timaree! I had no idea about plums! I'll leave mine out then before I give it the "taste test". But you're right, nothing beats home grown. I am glad you could tell it was sitting on a napkin though :-)

The painting is beautiful. There is only one way to eat plums and that is picked straight from the tree and eaten before the bloom has gone. We have a Victoria and a Golden Gage in the garden; I tend to pick and eat them for breakfast from late August.

I'm not much for fruits but I do know plums make the most wonderful jams and jellies! Love this painting; looks as though you could pluck straight from the page.

A beautiful painting, I love plums and later in the year I always pick lots and make, plum brandy, plum crumble, plum chutney and my favourite plum cake and of course eat lots of fresh ones.

I for one feel much better knowing I'm not the only one to make purchases for drawing purposes only. And yes, that is a beautiful rendering of the plum!
