Autumn's splendor

Autumn

Here in our mountains the brilliance of autumn has now given way to the quiet colors of November. This is a sampling of the color we had just a few weeks ago, when I began this piece. All of the leaves and then some are now in our yard. We have a wooded acre with a small area carved out for lawn around our house. Just enough lawn to collect the leaves not only from our trees but probably many other leaves blown in from neighboring trees as well. Hubby and kiddo spent most of the weekend raking. I've been occupied with cooking and baking. Somehow, this time of year inspires me to make huge pots of soup, breads and muffins. A time of gathering in has arrived.

Ann, this lovely!!! You have all the palette range for Autumn here in the Northwest (I'm in Victoria, BC - not that far from you).

You're right about the comfort foods of soups and muffins. I think I'll have to do some baking again, too ;)

Beautifully done! I really like the contrasting colors and the details in the leaves.

I love the details in the leaf veins. What brand of colored pencils were you using? I really like the blue in the sky. It reminds me of Prismacolor non photo blue but I'm not sure.

This is so beautiful. Your colors are so vivid and such a great combo. Your leaves look so real too. I like colored pencils so I guess I won't mind all the practice it will take me to make pictures like yours!

I'm a big fan of Katherine Tyrell's work, she's also a colored pencil artist (I think she calls it dry media :-). Looking at this, I'm impressed first, by your technique, and second by the wealth of detail. They 'feel' real, right down to the holes. Awesome.

I'm overwhelmed by all of your kind comments - thanks everyone!
For those who inquired, this was Inktense underpainting with Coloursofts over top.

And Margaret Ann, you are welcome anytime :)

Ann, this is beautiful! (I hope you're not tired of hearing that yet. ;) ) You really captured the feeling of bright sunlight on the colored leaves. Our leaves here are almost gone. And so is the bright sun. :(

Hello Ann. I found your blog (through Cindy's blog) and realized I had seen your beautiful leaves before on ST. I will certainly check back in for new beauties!

I can't believe that's a drawing - that's so amazing! I love using coloured pencils as well but I'm sure I could never get that sort of effect. As it happens I've got a photo similar to that that I wanted to paint but never did - I should have got you to do it! Really stunning.
