Endive Basket

Wanting a challenge of a different kind, I chose this image from our local farmers' market to paint. I wanted to see if I could carry over those lessons learned from painting landscapes, about finding the larger shapes and not worrying so much about the details. Of course the basket itself was extremely challenging in that it needed enough information to read "basket" and has lots of little shapes. I enjoyed simplifying the produce with high contrast shapes to express the brightness of the sunlight. And that patterned cloth with sunlight peeking through into the shadow from the basket was fun to paint. Our farmers' market is a visual feast of color, texture, and light, and when I go I enjoy collecting images to paint almost as much as selecting produce to cook and eat.

Yeesh, Ann! This looks like it was super difficult and you handled it beautifully! I am basking in the details, the shadows, the weave of the basket, the pattern on the cloth...and the ribs of the endive itself. Gorgeously handled!
