Taking the train

Southwest Memory

Back in 1992, the Professor and I traveled the US by train. We took a little over three weeks and scheduled stops along the way for visiting and sight-seeing. One of the trains that we rode was the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles, where we then picked up the Coast Starlight that took us to Seattle. One of our stops while on the Southwest Chief was Santa Fe, New Mexico. I have a ton of photos from that trip as we traveled the perimeter of the western United States. And that was back before digital cameras. I went digging through those photographs a while back and picked out a couple to use a subjects for paintings. This is one of them, from a view that I believe may have been spotted from the train window and photographed. Somewhere in New Mexico probably. Painting #30 of my 100 painting project.

Three weeks by train? Lucky you! We like to go on road trips too, and one of my husband's dreams is to do about what you've done with your train trip. I bet you had a wonderful and nostalgic time painting this one.

What a beautiful painting of a most gorgeous view! My grandparents took those same trains (they lived here in IL) when visiting my aunt (and myself) when we all lived up in WA state. I would imagine it was such a fun trip for you and Gary. I'd love to travel this country like that! Can't wait to see more, Ann!

Lucky you! I'd love to do a rail tour but h2b hates trains so we travel by road. Anyway - love tihs painting, I think it's really striking and inviting.

Nice layers and depth to this which is pretty much what we have here in the southwest (I'm in Arizona). Very nice painting.

I've wanted to take a long train trip for what seems like forever! It sounds like such an adventure! Your painting is wonderful. I've been to New Mexico many times and it does seem like a view I've seen along the way!

Beautiful view and love the earthy colors that you used this time. =) I am so used to seeing your usual fresh and cool colors, that sometimes I forgot that Ann is a very versatile artist^^
Thank you for your comment on that crab. And yeah, that card printing thing, the guy is really taking his time I guess... it's not really a priority to him and his business at the moment. But I am helping him with other kinds of illustration... shhhhh, don't tell anyone yet ;)

Yet ANOTHER gorgeous painting Ann! I love the colors and agree with Raena that the landscape is familiar. So much detail in such a small space!

Beautiful painting and your long travel trip.

Beautiful, and I love the "travelling" feeling you conveyed there. The glimpse of another place, where we won't stop. (I love watching the scenery when I travel, and this is just the same feeling!)
Love your awesome painting of the apples, and the drawings are great (the Gulf one, and my favorite, the spinach leaves!)
