Painting #24 - Soundside

Soundside
oil on canvas

I enjoy the challenge of painting water, its surface, depth, and movement. I am also attracted to edges in the landscape. Where the field meets the tree line, or in this case, where the water meets land. Only in marshy places that edge isn't always so well defined, and the rising and falling tide can make for dramatic variations within the course of a day. This rhythm of water and land is fascinating to me. Which probably explains why I have so many reference photos of marshes, shore lines, creeks and rivers. I am sure my traveling companions tire of my constant quest for one more marsh to photograph, one more view of the shore because of the changing light. This view is from the boardwalk in the park in the town of Duck, NC, looking out at the Currituck Sound that separates the Outer Banks from the mainland.

Such beautiful and a great sense of the shifting sands in the shoreline, Ann. I am constantly taking photographs thinking how beautiful they would be in a painting. Alas, I never paint most of them! So much beauty, so little time! This painting is gorgeous, my Blue Ridge Mountain friend!

I definitely see a gradual transition of your strength and style in color pencils into oil. I really love your color pencils drawings of the sky, the trees and the water, but you created the same magic in oil as well. Impressive!
Thank you Ann for your comment on my bad wrist. ^^ I am getting better now, no medicine, no nothing. Just a lot of water and a lot of rest

Ann, this little oil is simply luscious. The light, the feeling of water, all are handled with tenderness and skill. I admire your handling of water, and it's clear you study it. I think that's why I have such problems - I just don't spend enough time looking at waves and ripples.

All of these wonderful scenes make me want to visit NC. I was there last summer, but apparently not long enough to find all of these gems!

I love how you have added the extra colors to the foliage, water, and sky. They really bring out the painting.
